A Model Predictive Control Approach to Operation Optimization of an Ultracapacitor Bank for Frequency Control

This paper presents a nonlinear dynamic simulation model of an ultracapacitor (UC) bank and the associated control system. The system at hand consists two levels: lower level controls inverter UC bank, while upper is responsible for providing charging/discharging active power set points to be followed by level. focuses on development frequency control. Specifically, case studies are developed so as assess performance proposed framework. In first study using classical Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller. second devised Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm based internal linear prediction bank. both cases, used. modelled tested in Matlab/Simulink. response MPC-controlled compared 3 existing PID-control algorithms results show that MPC outperforms conventional PID controllers.
